Saint Ponticks Island Incident

Blood Canticle

The St. Ponticus rescue is a search for Morrigan that becomes an assault on Rodrigo’s island stronghold and an effort to free its captive Taltos. Led by Lestat with Mona and Quinn, the mission shifts from hopeful investigation to confrontation with a system of captivity, and ends on an uncertain note when the group finds frozen bodies and Lorkyn declares them dead.

Purpose and approach

The immediate purpose is to learn what happened to Morrigan and locate the Taltos who had lived on the island. Lestat decides to go after reading a message whose meaning he finds tantalizing, though he recognizes that he must wait until sunset before setting out. He plans to teach Mona how to use flight before the journey, and the three travel together toward the island.

The approach itself establishes the island’s divided character. From above, Lestat spots an airstrip marked with the words “St. Ponticus,” a small Cessna, and a longer runway suitable for a jet. The resort occupies the southern and southwestern shore, while jungle and rocky cliffs cover the rest. The combination of landing facilities, resort buildings, and undeveloped terrain makes the island appear accessible yet secluded: a place built to receive visitors while keeping its interior under control.

Rodrigo’s stronghold

At the island, Lestat and his companions encounter Rodrigo’s armed men. Lestat kills one of them while trying to force information about the Taltos from him, but the man knows nothing. The other guards flee or are subdued by Lestat, Mona, and Quinn. Lestat presents the violence as necessary to reach even one captive, yet the operation is not triumphant for him: he describes killing the remaining men as repellent rather than exhilarating. The rescuers’ urgency and their moral discomfort coexist throughout the assault.

Inside, Mona asks a captive Taltos whether he knows where Morrigan is. Lestat breaks the chain attached to the man’s leg and removes his cuff, freeing him from a restraint that had allowed access to the courtyard pool and a bath but kept him tethered to the room. The captive explains that escape remains difficult because Rodrigo and his followers control the island. His account turns the rescue from a search for information into a direct effort to break the captors’ hold.

The captives’ situation also clarifies the force of Rodrigo’s rule. The rescued Taltos describes Rodrigo as the dominant figure and mentions Lucia alongside him. The island’s confinement is not merely geographical: chains, armed attendants, and Rodrigo’s authority make the resort an enclosure in which the original inhabitants have been kept under another person’s control.

The Taltos and the confrontation

The search brings Lestat’s group into contact with Miravelle. When Oberon calls her by name, she appears and runs into his arms; he embraces her and breaks down in tears. Their reunion reveals a close bond between them and gives the rescue a personal dimension beyond the question of Morrigan. The encounter also interrupts the island’s atmosphere of suspicion with an unmistakable act of recognition between two members of the Taltos community.

The confrontation with Rodrigo ends when he tries to escape by jumping from a balcony. Lestat kills him before he can get away. At the same moment, Quinn uses force to restrain Lorkyn after she reaches for her gun; she is held against a wall with her arms spread, and remains notably calm. Oberon watches Lorkyn while weeping bitterly, as Miravelle clings to him. The scene leaves the group with an unresolved conflict among the Taltos themselves even as Rodrigo’s immediate control has ended.

Frozen bodies and aftermath

The rescuers hurry downstairs to a large kitchen and find a pair of enormous doors, one secured with many locks. Lestat breaks the locks. Once the mist clears, he sees bodies frozen on the floor. The discovery transforms the apparent rescue into a second, more devastating question: whether the missing people might still be alive in suspended animation.

Lestat telephones Rowan and tells her what the group has found. Mona takes the phone and insists that the people may be alive, while Lorkyn answers that they are dead. The exchange ends the episode without resolving the conflict between hope and certainty. Although the group has reached the island, freed a captive, reunited Oberon and Miravelle, and killed Rodrigo, the fate of the frozen people remains the decisive uncertainty of the mission.
